Dayra".. Stories of Violence in the Egyptian Society"

"Dayra" is a storytelling event hosted by Nazra For Feminist Studies and the Center For Egyptian Women's Legal Assistance (CEWLA). "Dayra" is part of Nazra and CEWLA's "Qanun Nashaz" 16-day campaign for the Elimination of Legalized Violence against Women, which begins on November 25th 2014, in conjunction with the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, and ends on the December 10th, in conjunction with the International Human Rights Day.

The significance of the event, which will be held in Alexandria on December 6th and in Cairo on December 10th, is emphasized by the fact that it features true stories of abuse suffered by women and men in Egyptian society. All stories are compiled and presented in a way that helps convey the message to the audience.

With "Dayra", we take a closer look at sexual harassment, sexual assault, domestic violence, among other abuses suffered mainly by women, but also by men, in both public and private spheres. Utilizing the highly effective and humanizing art of storytelling, "Dayra" exposes the ugly face of the abuses suffered by women, with society's blessing in some instances, the consent of the law in others, or, as is typically the case, both.

"Dayra" will take place on December 6th in Alexandria at El-Madina Studio and on December 10th in Cairo at Darb 1718. Entrance will start 6:30 pm and doors will be closed 7:00 pm.

The "Qanun Nashaz" campaign, in the context of which "Dayra" is presented, sheds light on all the legal issues standing in the way of eliminating violence against women in both public and private spheres, through a variety of artistic and cultural events.
